Drawn to Music Challenge March 1 - 31, 2017
Drawn to Music – a drawing challenge with music as the inspiration.
Anyone willing to listen to music, draw and have fun can participate.
The idea is to combine two of my favorite things – art and music – into a drawing challenge. Often I will work while listening to music, doing warm-up sketches of musicians or characters playing music. What if I did this everyday? What if I tried pushing some of the drawings conceptually? Would I illustrate a lyric, convey a mood, try to express visually what I was hearing? The idea intrigued me. Music inspired art.
But does there really need to be another drawing challenge? I could do this on my own and not make it an official challenge.
Then 2017 happened and I learned the National Endowment for the Arts may lose funding among other programs. Do we not value the arts? I’m a children’s book illustrator. Children’s books enrich children’s lives. Art and music enrich lives. The benefits that come from art in schools is no secret. Kids learn creativity, problem solving and visual literacy to name a few. Same with music. Learning to play an instrument has been shown to have a profound effect on a child’s education.
So what if I made my drawing challenge give back? What if participants made their art available for sale and donated money to art and music programs for schoolchildren? I found out that March is Music in our Schools month. I knew I had to make it an official challenge. The accountability to challenge myself to draw with music everyday and the opportunity to help with art and music projects in schools was something I didn’t want to pass up. And I can share it with others who may want to participate as well which could have a bigger impact than I could do on my own.
Come March 1, turn on some music and let’s get drawing!
