Ah, March Madness is upon us. That time of year when it is perfectly acceptable to be watching basketball almost anywhere. I hear it is a popular time for vasectomies, because if you are to be sitting on a couch with frozen peas in your lap, you might as well be watching basketball. I grew up as a University of Louisville basketball fan, so I will be cheering them on for the tournament. No matter who your team is, March Madness is full of exciting games. Everyone plays their heart out trying to make it to the next round. UofL is no exception.
So to celebrate March Madness, I decided to draw Russ "Russdiculous" Smith. I wanted to have him in a similar pose of the old school dunking cardinal logo that I remember from the 80s. I used to spend a lot of time drawing the UofL Cardinal as a kid. Here is the old logo:
I started sketching out "Russ". I am just getting basic shapes at this point and will do some other details and work on getting more of a likeness once in Adobe Illustrator. Since I was working away from my normal workspace, I didn't have my scanner. After doing a rough sketch on newsprint, I made a clean drawing on tracing paper. I took a photo of my cleaned up sketch with my iPhone, uploaded it to Dropbox and then placed it into Illustrator.
Next it was time to build all the shapes for the piece. Using a combination of the shape tools and a lot of the pen tool, I got the shapes started.
Next was to add color, add a "camo" pattern, some simple shading, and viola: russdiculous! I am considering doing some art featuring the other two seniors this year, Luke Hancock and Tim Henderson. Happy March Madness!
